Believe it or not ....

Richard Roberts, discoverer of the Hobbit, says local tales suggest the species could still exist

When I returned to Florida earlier this month, we heard the most incredible tales of little hairy people called Ebu Gogo - EBU meaning grandmother and Gogo meaning "He who eats n Anything." The stories contained the fabulous details - so detailed that you imagine that there is a grain of truth may be.

One of the village elders told us that the Ebu Gogo everything raw, including vegetables, fruit, eat meat, and if he had the chance, even human flesh.

If the food to be served, the plates were eating the pumpkin - the original guests from hell (or heaven if you hate washing dishes and it does not make me replace them) to have dinner each week.

The villagers say that the Ebu Gogo their cultures, tolerance searched, but decided to throw, when the Ebu Gogo - and ATE - one of her children has been stolen.

He fled with the child in his cave, he was in tThis migration of the local volcano, some tens of meters from a cliff. The villagers offered them bales of dry grass forage, which he accepted with gratitude.

A few days later, the villagers with a ball of fire, the grass was returned to start in the cave. Out of the EBU Gogo was burned, but not fried, and was the last time west direction of Liang Bua, where we found the Hobbit, as it happens.

When my colleague Gert van den Bergh first heard these stories a decade ago, several villages in the vicinity of the volcano are only minor changes in detail, thought nothing better than fairy tales and discovered The Hobbit. (I much prefer the EBU, on behalf of our knowledge, but my colleague Mike Morwood was Hobbit.)

The anatomical details in the legends are equally fascinating. They are large as three meters described with long hair, breasts in the pan, slightly above the ears, a process somewhat clumsy and rather long arms and fingers - confirmed by our further finds this year.

They [the EBU Gogo] murmuredED and the other words could be repeated [spoken by the inhabitants] literals. For example, because "here is a little to eat," he said, food is here. "Strap could climb slender trees but there's the rub, were never seen holding stone tools or the like, then we have many demanding artefacts in the H. floresiensis levels Liang Bua. It is the only evidence against the Liang Bua.

Women of the Ebu Gogo had extremely pendulous breasts while laying on his shoulders, across a sight that was in full flight.

We asked the villagers if they ever crossed with the gogo from the EBU. He flatly refused, but said that had the women of Labuan Baju (for the village at the western end of Flores, better known as LBJ) for long breasts, so they should have.

LBJ poor must be the subject of jokes in Flores, like the Irish and Tasmania.

The outbreak of a local Liang Bua (in western Flores) may have wiped out local hobbits there are about 12,000 years, bUT would have held much later in other parts of the island. The villagers said that the hobbit was seen just before the village moved location, away from the volcano just before the Dutch colonists in the central part of Flores in the 19th Century populated.

Do the Ebu gogo yet? It would be a bitch to the last pockets of rainforest found on the island. There are many pockets, but who knows. At least once, look for the lava cave, or similar, to be done, because remains of hair from a few hundred years, is likely to survive, trapped in the cave walls or incorporated in deposits, and would be ideal for the analysis of ancient DNA.

Interestingly, we found pieces landed, with black hair in them this year in the amount of the Hobbit, but not yet whether they are human or not. We will do DNA tests, which will hopefully be instructive.

I actually wrote a fictional novel about the discovery of the Ebu Gogo called Flores Girl: The Children God Forgot. It's an adventure novel about two scientists who unwittingly introduce a tribe of dwarf prehistoric people living in isolation for a million years to the ultimate modern predator: humanity. Go to www.floresgirl.com for more and the ebook novel is free.

I actually contacted some of the researchers to check my accounts of Homo floresiensis.

Cheers,
